MoES and Australia strengthen locally led teacher support in Lao PDR

Mr. Silamphone Thepboauly, lecturer from National University of Teacher Education (NUTE), Savannakhet campus noted “We are using real classroom situations to develop the training materials. For example, we are discussing how to support children who do not speak Lao at home and how to guide teachers working with three grade levels in one classroom. These examples will help make the training practical and relevant for teachers.”

The workshop is highly practical and hands-on. Participants are drawing on their experience of supporting teachers, selecting useful information and turning it into training that teacher support teams can use in real school settings. They are designing participatory activities, preparing examples and practicing how to deliver each session.

Ms. Saysouly Sophouphieng, lecturer from National University of Teacher Education, Khang Khay campus commented “This workshop is important because it gives teachers from three institutes the opportunity to work together and share their experience. We are not only preparing materials. We are also testing different activities and discussing how teacher support teams can use them to support teachers in schools. This will help us make the upcoming teacher support training more practical and responsive to their needs.”

Michael Currie, First Secretary, Australian Embassy said: “Supporting teacher training teams to develop their own training materials is a sustainable investment in the future of teachers and students across Lao PDR. When these materials are developed by education professionals who understand local schools and communities, they are more relevant to teachers’ everyday experiences and provide practical ideas they can use in their classrooms. Building this local expertise and ownership will help ensure teachers continue to receive the support they need as education priorities change.”

This work is an important step towards a more locally led and sustainable teacher CPD system. Through the partnership between MoES and Australia, supported by the BEQUAL program, teacher education institutes are strengthening their role as technical partners in helping teachers improve teaching and learning for students across the country.
